What it’s Really Like Being the Captain Everyone Trusts

I got this report from an Ocean Coach graduate.  It captures the deep satisfaction of Being the Captain Everyone Trusts.

"Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks.  Still appreciating the Ocean Coach class and all it has done to help and elevate our experience on the ocean.  It was a pretty complete day yesterday.

Only captains really know all that goes into a day fishing; figuring out swell forecasts and timing that with tides just to get the crew to the dock, not appreciating the boat is fully loaded and stocked with fishing gear, safety gear, food, drinks, electronics and a plan and location for the day.

Crossed the bar and was hailed by the Coast Guard,  I knew what to say and was confident talking to them.  Gave them my plan, said thanks and was off.  Had a fun and safe day fishing then the CG started warning of degrading conditions, restricted it to 40' and predicted closing the bar.

I hailed them and told them i was 30 miles out and asked for their advice. (That was scary) they said come in and reassess.   Derek and I reviewed our plan for crossing a bar with breakers because they warned of occasional 6-8 steep breaks.  The crew was a bit shaken, but I'm sure because Derek and I acted so matter of factly they didn't feel concerned.

Turns out the Florence CG majorly over reacted and the bar was just big rollers, but we were ready and confident we had a plan to navigate it successfully. Pretty amazed we have been fishing in the ocean for a year and a half and we feel like we have many more years of real knowledge and experience.  Again, thanks.

Going out 35 miles, and making it back is the reward, but doing it, and doing it right gives you memories and experiences that will shine for a lifetime.  Fishing wasn't very good, but Derek caught a monster.

When people see the picture, they see the smiles and the fish.  When a captain sees it, they know there is hours and hours of work and  preparation that go into it, either gained by a lifetime of experience, or taught by someone who has.  Again, thanks. Your class has made this possible for us."

PS  Thad and son Derek are 2020 Ocean Coach graduates.  In coaching, they learned how to talk to the CG on the radio, how to judge forecasts, and how to cross a breaking bar, in the unlikely event they ever face that situation.
